The Lucena Position

Rook and pawn endgames occur quite often in chess. One of these is the Lucena Position. This position is truly important since endgames may often boil right down to it. As it is a sure win, endgames sometimes will come down to the player with the pawn trying to arrive at the Lucena position and the other player trying to avoid it.

The trick is to build a bridge with your rook, king and pawn, so that the opponent can no longer give you any checks, and you are free to promote your pawn.

Here is a nice short video I found teaching the Lucena Position. Below the video you will find a demonstration board, where you can try it out.
